  1. UCU has sole negotiating rights on the terms and conditions of service all academic and academic related staff. All contracts and procedures currently in use have been agreed with UCU or its predecessor AUT. The stronger the union is, the more effectively we are able to negotiate.
  2. Membership of the UCU guarantees you access to advice, information, and personal representation. If you are experiencing difficulties with a grievance, face disciplinary action, feel overloaded or are being discriminated against, UCU is there for you.
  3. Once you have been a member for 90 days, you will have access to free legal advice related to your employment. Our Legal Scheme gives you direct assistance from solicitors.
  4. UCU promotes excellence in all aspects of higher education. We defend academic freedom and see maintaining standards and the best traditions of higher education as a priority. UCU regularly issues publications and briefings on professional issues.
  5. Nationally UCU are working hard to represent your interests to employers and government on such issues as pay and underfunding in higher education.
  6. UCU is your opportunity to get your voice heard in the national debate about the future of Higher Education.
  7. Meet likeminded colleagues with a range of different experiences and ideas from across the university and beyond. UCU members come from a variety of different backgrounds and the UCU nationally has specialist forums for different staff groups. Many senior members of staff are members of the UCU.
  8. UCU’s national training programme supports local representatives and can help you to develop your skills in negotiation, representation and in key work-related issues such as employment legislation.
