Dear Colleagues,

The School of Mathematical Sciences has told all postgraduate TAs and Demonstrators that we will not be paid for our teaching until the March payroll, due to missed payroll deadlines. Many of us will start the year with almost three months of no pay. We have still not received contracts for our teaching this year, so cannot even check if last year’s missing bank holiday pay has been corrected. This comes in the face of cuts last term, where our teaching hours were slashed, many teaching roles were changed to lower-paid positions, and paid marking was cut completely from TA hours. At the same time, both the School of Mathematical Sciences and the University itself are in surplus, with the department financially up from last academic year.

Signed,

School of Mathematics Sciences TAs and Demonstrators, 19 February 2023.

Update: Since drafting this letter, some TAs in the School of Mathematical Sciences have received their contracts. However, many are still working without a contract and none were paid in the January or February payroll.
